Digital logic in five-minute pieces

These guides are the reading half of Gatesmith, our daily logic-gate puzzle. Each one ends with a circuit you can open in the free simulator and a matching practice puzzle. Read them in order if you are new; dip in anywhere if you are not.

GateOutput is 1 whenSymbol in formulas
NOTthe input is 0NOT A
ANDboth inputs are 1A AND B
ORat least one input is 1A OR B
XORexactly one input is 1A XOR B
NANDnot both inputs are 1NAND(A, B)
NORboth inputs are 0NOR(A, B)
XNORthe inputs are equalXNOR(A, B)

Done reading? Put it to use on today's puzzle, or look up how a past one was solved in the archive. In the simulator, open inputs read as 0, a wire shows green when it carries a 1, and a loop that never settles shows a yellow X.
